Chapter 14 - Arrest in the Corridor

|

Back in my hospital room, Detective Vance received the radio transmission from the crime scene team. He listened intently through his earpiece, nodding slowly as his face grew increasingly stern.

He looked up at Derek and Brenda, who were still standing near the window, arguing viciously with each other over who was responsible for the situation.

“Derek Vance and Brenda Vance,” Detective Vance announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “You are both under arrest for aggravated felony assault, false imprisonment, witness tampering, and grand larceny.”

Two uniformed backup officers stepped into the room, pulling Derek’s arms behind his back and clicking the steel cuffs tightly around his wrists.

“Ow! Watch my arms! I’m a corporate vice president!” Derek yelled, struggling against the officers as his expensive suit jacket was wrinkled. “You can’t do this to me! Abigail, tell them to stop! Tell them it was an accident!”

I looked him straight in the eyes, my expression utterly ruthless.

“You told me a broken leg would teach me to obey, Derek,” I said softly. “Now let’s see what seven years in state prison teaches you.”

Brenda shrieked as the second officer handcuffed her behind her back, her yellow cardigan slipping off her shoulders as she was turned around.

“You ungrateful little viper!” Brenda screamed at me, her face contorted in ugly, pathetic rage as she was dragged toward the door. “We took you into our family! We gave you a home!”

“You gave me a cage,” I corrected coldly. “And today, I burned it down.”

Patients and nurses lined the hospital hallway, watching in stunned silence as the prominent corporate executive and his mother were led away in handcuffs, weeping and protesting their innocence all the way to the elevators.
