Chapter 29 - The Long Drive

The rain finally broke just as the unmarked black sedan crossed the city limits, leaving the towering, glittering skyscrapers of Victoria’s empire far behind in the rearview mirror. Jasper watched the urban sprawl slowly dissolve into the quiet, rolling darkness of the countryside. The transition felt incredibly surreal, like waking up from a decade-long nightmare into a sudden, jarring reality.

The driver, a silent professional who hadn't spoken a single word since they left the loading dock, reached into the passenger seat and handed Jasper a heavy, leather-bound portfolio.

Jasper opened it carefully with his uninjured hand. Inside rested a pristine, authenticated passport bearing a name he had never seen before: Arthur Vance. Beneath the passport was a secure hardware wallet, a sleek piece of titanium that held a highly encrypted, untraceable cryptocurrency balance. It wasn't the billions he had once controlled, nor was it the five million the assassin had promised him. It was a modest, quiet sum—enough to buy a comfortable home, live securely off the grid, and never have to work a soul-crushing job again.

There was also a set of keys to a property located in a remote coastal town three hundred miles away. Victoria had provided exactly what she promised: a total, absolute erasure.

He ran his thumb over the gold lettering on the passport. Arthur Vance. The name felt strange on his tongue, but it carried the incredibly light weight of a blank slate.

Jasper—now Arthur—looked out the window as the first pale light of dawn began to crack the horizon, bleeding soft hues of purple and gold across the wet asphalt. The adrenaline had completely left his system, leaving him utterly exhausted, but his mind was remarkably clear.

He didn't feel the burning, toxic desire for revenge that had consumed his every waking thought in prison. He didn't feel the bitter, agonizing jealousy that had choked him when he saw Victoria in the SUV. He realized that the pursuit of power, the endless cycle of corporate warfare and retaliation, was nothing but a gilded cage. Victoria was still trapped in it, constantly fighting to protect her throne, surrounded by enemies in the dark.

Arthur Vance, however, was entirely free.

He closed the leather portfolio and rested it on the seat beside him. The throbbing pain in his ribs and the sting of the stitches on his forehead were grounding, physical reminders of the price he had paid for this freedom. He had walked through the fire, confronted the darkest parts of his own legacy, and emerged on the other side.

As the sun finally broke over the horizon, illuminating the long, empty highway stretching out before him, Arthur closed his eyes and finally allowed himself to sleep.
