Chapter 19 - The Revelation

Jasper limped through the labyrinth of the industrial district, sticking to the deep shadows of the alleyways to avoid the wailing police sirens. His ribs screamed in agony with every breath, and a deep laceration above his left eye was sending a steady stream of blood down his face, blinding him in the rain.
He needed to hide, but more importantly, he needed to understand exactly what he had just unleashed. He found a relatively dry spot beneath a rusted fire escape and slumped against the brick wall, pulling out a burner phone he had stripped from the driver’s jacket before leaving the wreckage.
The phone was highly encrypted, but it wasn't locked. The assassin had been overly confident. Jasper quickly accessed the recent message logs, scrolling through the heavily coded communications. Most of it was corporate espionage jargon, but one thread stood out. It was a secondary contingency plan, labeled Operation: Severance.
Jasper’s eyes widened as he read the decrypted text. The hostile takeover wasn't just digital. The men who hired the assassin didn't just want Victoria’s company; they wanted to utterly destroy her legacy.
If digital breach fails, initiate physical extraction of the primary leverage. Location: Sterling Penthouse. Target: The heir.
The breath completely left Jasper’s lungs. They weren't going after Victoria. They were going after her child. Leo. The laughing toddler in the SUV.
The parameters of the operation were brutally clear. A specialized assault team was currently waiting on standby. If the digital hack failed—which it spectacularly had—the team was authorized to breach the penthouse, bypass the physical security, and kidnap the child to force Victoria into signing over the company under extreme duress.
Jasper stared at the glowing screen of the burner phone, the rain soaking his hair. Victoria had built an impenetrable digital fortress, but she had grown arrogant. She assumed her enemies would only fight on the battlefield she controlled. She had no idea a physical assault team was already moving into position.
He hated her. She had ruined his life, stripped him of his dignity, and left him to rot in a federal cage. Walking away right now would be the ultimate revenge. He could disappear into the night, let the mercenaries take the child, and watch the untouchable queen finally break.
He closed his eyes, imagining the absolute devastation that would soon consume her perfect, opulent life.

But then he saw the toddler's face again. The innocent, carefree laugh. The child had no part in the sins of the mother. The child was just a pawn in a vicious, unforgiving game.
Jasper shattered the burner phone against the brick wall. He was a disgraced executive, a convicted felon, and a ruined man. But he was not a monster. He pushed himself off the cold ground, his muscles screaming in protest, and began to run toward the glittering skyline of the city.
