Chapter 20 - The Ascent

The Sterling Tower was a marvel of modern architecture, a needle of steel and glass piercing the storm clouds. The bottom fifty floors were corporate offices, but the top three floors were Victoria’s private, heavily fortified residence. Jasper knew the building’s schematics perfectly; he had negotiated the land acquisition twelve years ago.

He arrived at the loading docks in the subterranean levels, completely bypassed by the heavy police presence patrolling the front lobby. He was bleeding, soaked to the bone, and shivering uncontrollably, but adrenaline provided a terrifying, singular focus.

He couldn't use the main elevators; they required biometric scans that would instantly flag his presence to Max's security team. Instead, he forced open a rusted utility door and entered the primary maintenance shaft, a terrifying vertical tunnel that housed the building's massive fiber-optic cables and ventilation ducts.

The climb was absolute agony. The metal rungs of the maintenance ladder were slick with condensation, and his bruised ribs protested violently with every upward pull. He climbed for what felt like hours, ascending through the dark, echoing shaft, driven entirely by the ticking clock of the mercenary assault.

When he finally reached the seventieth floor, his muscles were trembling to the point of failure. He pried open the heavy ventilation grate and collapsed onto the polished marble floor of a darkened utility corridor, gasping for oxygen.

He had breached the perimeter of the penthouse.

The corridor was silent, but it was the heavy, unnatural silence of a space that had been violently cleared. Jasper pulled himself to his feet, creeping toward the edge of the hallway. He peered around the corner into the grand foyer.

Two of Victoria’s elite, private security guards were lying motionless on the immaculate white rug. Standing over them were four men dressed in tactical black gear, armed with suppressed submachine guns and wearing night-vision optics. The physical assault team had already arrived. They had bypassed the outer security grid with terrifying efficiency.

"Communications to the command center are severed," one of the mercenaries whispered into his radio, gesturing toward the master suite. "The mother is in the east wing. The target is in the nursery. We split up. Grab the kid, secure the mother, and we move to the roof for extraction."

Jasper’s heart hammered against his sternum. He was completely unarmed, outmanned, and severely injured. If he stepped out, they would gun him down in a fraction of a second. But if he stayed hidden, Victoria and her son were going to be taken.

He looked down the utility corridor. Mounted on the wall was a heavy, red emergency fire axe inside a glass case. It was a primitive tool in a fortress of advanced technology, but it was all he had. Jasper wrapped his bleeding hand in his jacket sleeve and prepared to shatter the glass.
