Chapter 22 - The Nursery

Victoria sprinted down the long, opulent hallway toward the nursery, the heavy handgun raised and steady despite the sheer terror gripping her chest. The strobing red lights cast terrifying, elongated shadows across the walls. She could hear the muffled, chaotic shouting from the grand foyer over the deafening blare of the alarms.
She reached the heavy oak door of the nursery and shoved it open.
Leo was awake, sitting up in his crib, clutching a stuffed bear and crying hysterically from the noise. Victoria rushed forward, dropping the gun onto the changing table to scoop her terrified son into her arms. She pressed his face into her shoulder, whispering frantic, soothing words into his hair.
"I have you, Leo. Mommy has you," she breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs.
She turned to grab the weapon and retreat to the reinforced panic room, but the doorway was no longer empty.
The mercenary team leader stood in the threshold, his suppressed submachine gun aimed directly at Victoria’s chest. The man was covered in white fire-suppression foam, looking like a terrifying phantom in the flashing red light.
"Put the gun on the floor, Ms. Sterling," the mercenary commanded, his voice cold and entirely devoid of empathy. "And hand over the boy. Do exactly as I say, and you both get to live through the night."
Victoria pulled Leo tighter against her chest, her eyes blazing with a fierce, uncompromising maternal rage. She slowly reached out, her fingertips brushing the cold titanium grip of her handgun on the table.
"If you touch him," Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with lethal intent, "I will ensure you are hunted to the ends of the earth. I will buy the ground you walk on and turn it to ash."
The mercenary chuckled softly, adjusting his aim. "I appreciate the threat, ma'am. But you aren't in a boardroom right now. You are out of options. Step away from the weapon."
Before Victoria could make a desperate, suicidal dive for the gun, a dark figure materialized in the hallway directly behind the mercenary.
It was Jasper. He was battered, covered in blood and white foam, holding the stolen submachine gun.
"He told you to step away from the weapon," Jasper said, his voice a ragged, exhausted growl.
The mercenary leader spun around in shock, realizing too late that his perimeter had been breached. Jasper didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger, firing a deafening, chaotic burst that caught the mercenary squarely in the tactical vest. The kinetic impact threw the man violently forward, crashing through a glass display case and collapsing motionless onto the nursery floor.

The immediate silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the wailing of the alarms and Leo's quiet sobbing.
Victoria stared at the bleeding, ruined man standing in the doorway of her child’s room. It was the absolute last face she ever expected to see.
