Chapter 12 - The Breadcrumbs

Jasper stared at the glowing green text of the Aegis Vanguard file until his eyes burned. As a paroled felon, his internet access on the municipal terminal was heavily monitored and severely restricted. He couldn't just open a browser and search for the corporate officers. He had to be incredibly careful, utilizing the archaic internal database to cross-reference the property deeds without triggering the automated security flags set by his probation officer.

He typed a series of command prompts, burying his search queries beneath a mountain of routine zoning requests. The digital breadcrumbs were deliberately convoluted, bouncing through shell companies and blind trusts, a labyrinth designed to exhaust any forensic accountant. But Jasper wasn't just an accountant. Before the scandal, before the trial, he had been the brilliant, ruthless Chief Financial Officer of Victoria’s empire. He had built the labyrinth. He knew exactly where the trapdoors were hidden.

For three hours, he ignored his mandatory fifteen-minute break, his fingers moving with frantic, calculated precision. He pulled up the physical addresses of the properties Aegis Vanguard was quietly acquiring. They weren't high-value commercial real estate. They were abandoned substations, decommissioned water treatment plants, and forgotten subterranean transit hubs. Someone was spending tens of millions of dollars to acquire the city's dead infrastructure.

The final piece of the puzzle clicked into place just as his shift was ending. He traced the funding source of the most recent acquisition. It didn't route back to Victoria Sterling’s pristine corporate accounts. It routed to a heavily sanctioned paramilitary contracting firm operating out of Eastern Europe.

A cold spike of adrenaline pierced through Jasper’s exhaustion. Victoria wasn't expanding her real estate portfolio; she was being systematically targeted. Someone was using the ghost corporation they had built together to quietly lay a siege around her empire, purchasing properties that sat directly on top of her company's private fiber-optic network and physical power grids.

The woman in the SUV, the untouchable queen who had looked at him like garbage, was completely unaware that the ground beneath her feet was being hollowed out. Jasper leaned back in his cheap plastic chair, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips for the first time in years. Knowledge was power, and for the first time since his conviction, Jasper held a loaded gun in his hands.
