Chapter 27 - The Phantom Ledger

Jasper’s eyes snapped open, ignoring the searing pain in his ribs. He stared at Victoria, trying to comprehend the sheer magnitude of the command she had just issued. Erasing a federal parole file wasn't just difficult; it required breaching heavily fortified government databases and manipulating deeply embedded bureaucratic architecture. It was a massive, incredibly illegal risk.
"You can't just delete a person, Victoria," Jasper wheezed, clutching his bandaged side. "The federal marshals will eventually notice the discrepancy. They will hunt me."
"They won't hunt a ghost," Victoria countered smoothly, walking over to the tactical console and typing a rapid series of commands. "Max, initiate the Phantom Ledger protocol."
Max’s eyes widened slightly, a rare display of genuine shock. "Victoria, the Phantom Ledger is our absolute fail-safe. It's the highest level of deep-cover integration we possess. If we use it for him..."
"Do it," Victoria commanded, her tone allowing absolutely no room for debate.
Max nodded quickly, her fingers flying across the holographic interface. Within seconds, lines of heavily encrypted code began overriding external databases.
Victoria turned back to Jasper. "We aren't just deleting your file, Jasper. We are replacing it. As of tonight, official federal records will reflect that you perished in the car crash beneath the overpass. Dental records, DNA fragments, and witness testimonies will all seamlessly corroborate the narrative. The man who went to prison for my crimes no longer exists in any system on earth."
"Why?" Jasper asked, his voice raw. "You owe me nothing. I tried to burn your company to the ground tonight."
"And you saved my son's life," Victoria said, looking at the sleeping toddler on the cot. Her expression softened, revealing a fleeting glimpse of the humanity she usually kept buried beneath layers of corporate armor. "In the world we built, leverage is everything. Debts must be paid in full. You handed me the evidence to destroy Aegis Vanguard, and you bled on my floor to protect my bloodline. The ledger between us is officially balanced, Jasper. We are done."
Jasper stared at her, the reality of his new existence slowly washing over him. He wasn't going back to the windowless basement. He wasn't going back to the halfway house or the soul-crushing data entry terminal. The invisible chains of his past had just been violently shattered.

"What happens now?" Jasper asked softly.
"Now, you disappear," Victoria stated, signaling to the two massive security operatives standing by the door. "My men will escort you out through the subterranean tunnels. They will provide you with a sterile medical facility to heal, a new, airtight identity, and enough untraceable capital to start over anywhere in the world. But understand this, Jasper: if I ever see your face in this city again, I will not be as generous."
