Chapter 23 - The Enemy of My Enemy

Jasper lowered the smoking submachine gun, leaning heavily against the doorframe for support. His breathing was ragged, and the adrenaline was finally beginning to recede, leaving behind a profound, agonizing pain in his ribs. He looked at Victoria, standing fiercely in her silk robe, clutching her son like a shield.

For a long, tense moment, the architect of his ruin and the architect of her salvation simply stared at each other across the chaotic nursery.

"Jasper," Victoria breathed, absolute shock warring with suspicion in her eyes. She quickly snatched her titanium handgun from the table, aiming it directly at him. "Are you with them? Did you orchestrate this?"

Jasper let out a dry, humorless laugh, dropping his weapon onto the floor and raising his empty hands. "If I was with them, Victoria, I wouldn't have just shot their team leader. I would have let him take the boy."

Victoria didn't lower her gun. "You breached my servers tonight. Max traced your biometric signature. You tried to sell me out to Aegis Vanguard."

"I did," Jasper admitted, offering no apologies. "I took the money. I wanted to watch your empire burn. But I didn't know they were coming for the kid. When I found out, I crashed the car, climbed your maintenance shaft, and fought through a tactical hit squad. So, you can either shoot me, or you can help me secure the perimeter, because there are still two mercenaries left in your foyer."

Victoria stared at him, her sharp mind processing the tactical reality of the situation in a fraction of a second. The hatred and betrayal between them spanned years, but the immediate threat required an alliance. She slowly lowered the handgun.

"The panic room is behind the primary bookshelf in my office," Victoria said, her voice shifting back to the cold, authoritative tone of a CEO. "It has an independent communications array. If we can get Leo inside, we can lock down the floor and wait for the police."

"Lead the way," Jasper nodded, pushing himself off the doorframe.

They moved quickly into the strobing, foam-filled hallway. Victoria took point, her weapon raised, while Jasper walked backward behind her, guarding their flank. They navigated the luxurious corridors, moving past destroyed artwork and shattered glass, an incredibly surreal alliance forged in absolute desperation.

As they approached the double doors of Victoria’s office, the remaining two mercenaries stepped out from the shadows of the foyer, their weapons raised.

"Down!" Jasper roared, shoving Victoria and Leo forcefully to the marble floor just as a hail of suppressed gunfire shredded the heavy wooden doors of the office above their heads. They were pinned in the hallway, completely cut off from the panic room.
