Chapter 13 - The Shadow in the Hallway

The rain had finally stopped by the time Jasper’s shift ended at midnight, leaving the city streets slick and mirroring the harsh glare of the neon streetlights. He walked the eight blocks to his halfway house, his mind racing with the implications of the Aegis Vanguard files. He possessed the leverage to either save Victoria and demand his life back, or to watch her empire burn to the ground and finally claim his revenge.

He turned into the narrow, garbage-strewn alley that led to his building’s entrance. The motion-sensor security light above the metal door was broken again. Jasper fumbled for his keys in the dark, his breath pluming in the freezing air.

"You always were the last one to leave the office, Jasper," a smooth, cultured voice echoed from the deep shadows near the dumpsters.

Jasper froze, dropping his keys. He didn't turn around. The voice belonged to a world he had been violently exiled from. "Who is there?"

A man stepped into the faint ambient light of the street. He was impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal topcoat, holding a sleek black umbrella despite the break in the rain. His face was sharp, aristocratic, and completely devoid of warmth. Jasper didn't know his name, but he instantly recognized the breed. This was a corporate cleaner, a man who solved billion-dollar problems in the absolute dark.

"My employers have been monitoring the municipal database," the man said, taking a slow step forward. "We noticed a sudden, highly sophisticated spike in queries regarding Aegis Vanguard. Imagine our surprise when the IP address traced back to a disgraced CFO serving out his parole in a basement."

"I was just doing my job," Jasper lied, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Data entry. Nothing more."

"Please, let us not insult each other's intelligence," the man smiled coldly. "You found the siege lines. You know what we are doing to Victoria Sterling. And because you built the original architecture of her company, you know exactly how to breach her final firewall."

The man reached into his coat and produced a heavy, unmarked manila envelope. He tossed it onto the wet pavement at Jasper’s feet.

"Inside is an offshore account number containing five million dollars, an untraceable passport, and a private jet itinerary leaving for Zurich at dawn," the man stated calmly. "All you have to do is provide the legacy executive override codes. You get your freedom, and Victoria Sterling loses everything. The choice is entirely yours."
