Chapter 24 - The Digital Burn

Marcus’s hand slammed violently against the red kill-switch.

Instantly, the deafening roar of the thousands of servers shifted into a high-pitched, terrifying whine. Sparks showered from the ceiling conduits, and heavy blast doors began dropping over the warehouse exits.

"He initiated a thermal overload!" one of the tactical agents shouted over the chaos. "The servers are going to catch fire! He’s destroying the physical drives to erase the digital currency!"

"Get him out of here!" Hayes commanded, grabbing Marcus by the collar and dragging him forcefully away from the console.

Thick, acrid black smoke began pouring from the overheating server racks. The temperature in the warehouse spiked dangerously. The tactical team swiftly cuffed Marcus, dragging the screaming, defeated mastermind toward the only remaining exit.

I didn't run immediately. I stared at the central console. Marcus was trying to burn billions of dollars of illicit funds to keep them out of federal hands. Money that had been stolen from thousands of innocent people across the globe. Money that belonged to the victims of the Caldwell empire.

I leaped over the control desk, my fingers flying across the master keyboard.

"Maya! We have to go! The building is going to ignite!" Hayes yelled from the doorway, coughing through the thick smoke.

"Give me ten seconds!" I shouted back.

I navigated the complex administrative override protocols Marcus had left open on the screen. The thermal overload was irreversible, but the external data ports were still active. I pulled a high-capacity federal encrypted thumb drive from my pocket—the one Hayes had given me earlier—and jammed it into the main terminal.

"Initiate emergency data dump," I commanded the system.

The progress bar crawled agonizingly across the screen as flames began licking the server racks just feet away from me. The heat was unbearable, blistering my skin.

90%... 95%... 100%. Transfer Complete.

I snatched the thumb drive, leaped over the desk, and sprinted toward the exit. Hayes grabbed my arm, hauling me through the rusted door just as the entire warehouse erupted into a massive, blinding fireball.

The shockwave threw us both into the deep snow. I laid on my back, gasping for freezing, clean air, watching the warehouse burn against the dark Icelandic sky.

I held up the thumb drive. It was slightly charred, but intact.

"I got the routing keys," I breathed, looking at Hayes. "We can recover the money. All of it."

Hayes looked at the burning building, then at the drive in my hand, and finally at me. He broke into a massive, soot-stained smile.

"Maya Caldwell," Hayes said, shaking his head in sheer disbelief. "You are officially my favorite person in the world."
