Chapter 13 - The Golden Cage

The black SUV arrived outside my building exactly at 9:00 AM. A massive, silent man in a dark suit opened the rear door. I climbed in, carrying nothing but a small leather duffel bag. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, but my face remained an unreadable mask.
Julian Vance was waiting for me at the private aviation terminal at SFO. His private jet was a sleek, dark Gulfstream, the interior customized with cream leather and mahogany accents. It looked like the ultimate luxury, but as the heavy cabin doors sealed shut, I knew exactly what it was: a golden cage hurtling through the sky at forty thousand feet.
"You look tense," Julian observed, pouring himself a glass of expensive bourbon as the plane taxied down the runway. "Relax. We are simply conducting a business transaction. Once the cipher is in my hands, you can return to your mundane little life in Mission Bay."
"I don't drink with extortionists," I replied coldly, refusing the glass he offered. "How did Adrian get involved with you in the first place? He was a real estate fraudster, not an international money launderer."
Julian chuckled, crossing his long legs. "Adrian was ambitious, but severely underfunded. He came to my syndicate looking for a loan to purchase his first commercial high-rise. We gave him the money, but we demanded absolute control of the financial architecture. When he realized he was just our puppet, he panicked. He tried to hide our operational cipher in Geneva, thinking it would buy him leverage. Instead, it just got him locked in a federal cage."
"And what exactly is the cipher?" I asked, testing the waters.
Julian’s eyes darkened, the playful demeanor instantly vanishing. "It is a physical hard drive containing the routing numbers, access codes, and ledger histories for every corrupt politician, judge, and CEO on my payroll across the globe. If that drive falls into the hands of the authorities, my entire empire collapses."
I looked out the window at the endless expanse of blue sky. The stakes were astronomically higher than I had anticipated. I wasn't just retrieving stolen money; I was holding the key to dismantling a global shadow government.

"I'll get your drive," I said quietly.
Julian smiled. "See? I knew you were a reasonable woman."
