Chapter 21 - The Unmasking

The armored van sped away from the warzone, flanked by two heavily armed escort vehicles. The sounds of gunfire slowly faded into the distance, replaced by the wailing of sirens echoing through the city.

I sat in the back of the van, shaking violently from the adrenaline. The federal agents around me were shouting coordinates into their radios, coordinating the massive response at my condo.

An hour later, we arrived at the FBI field office downtown. The building was a fortress of security. I was ushered into the director's secure briefing room, where a team of medics immediately checked my vitals and offered me a blanket and water.

Hayes walked into the room shortly after, his arm heavily bandaged but his eyes blazing with a fierce, victorious fire.

"They secured the building," Hayes announced, taking a seat across from me. "Six mercenaries dead, four in custody. We lost two agents, but the line held. Julian’s syndicate just signed their own death warrant by attacking federal law enforcement on US soil."

I placed the platinum locket on the large mahogany table. "Did the second key work?"

Hayes nodded, a triumphant smile spreading across his exhausted face. "The cyber-team integrated the micro-SD card with the titanium hard drive. The decryption was instantaneous. Maya, the amount of data on that drive is staggering."

He pulled up a massive holographic display on the monitor behind him. Lists of names, offshore bank accounts, shell corporations, and wire transfers scrolled rapidly across the screen.

"Julian Vance wasn't just laundering money for local real estate fraudsters like Adrian," Hayes explained, pointing to the screen. "He was funding international arms dealers, human trafficking rings, and illegal political action committees. And he had a massive network of corrupt US officials protecting him."

"Who?" I asked, staring at the endless list of names.

"Two federal judges. Three state senators. The CEO of a major pharmaceutical company," Hayes listed them off, his voice heavy with disgust. "But the most damning evidence is against the man who authorized the hit on your condo tonight."

Hayes tapped the keyboard. A single name and photograph filled the screen.

I gasped. It was Marcus Thorne. The same former accountant who had supposedly taken a plea deal and helped me bypass the vault in Geneva.

"Marcus?" I whispered in absolute disbelief. "He was working for Julian the entire time?"

"Worse," Hayes said grimly. "Julian Vance was just the violent enforcer. Marcus Thorne was the true mastermind. He played the victim to escape the Caldwell trial, manipulated you into breaking into the Geneva vault, and then sent mercenaries to kill you when you found the secondary key. He wanted the empire entirely for himself."
