Chapter 11 - The Impossible Choice

I stared at the document on the damp wooden dock, the fog swirling around my ankles. The implications of Julian’s words hit me like a physical blow. Adrian hadn't just manipulated my life while we were together; he had planted landmines in my future, ensuring I would be implicated in his darkest crimes even if I managed to escape.
"If I go to a bank in Geneva and access a fraudulent account containing illicit funds, I become an active participant in your money laundering syndicate," I said, locking eyes with Julian. "I become a federal criminal."
"You are already a federal criminal on paper," Julian corrected gently, stepping closer. "Adrian was very thorough with his forgery. If I anonymously forward those documents to your friend Prosecutor Hayes, he will have no choice but to indict you. You will lose your condo, your freedom, and your triumphant reputation. You will rot in the cell right next to Adrian."
"Hayes knows Adrian forged documents," I countered, trying to keep the panic out of my voice. "He knows I was a victim."
"Proving coercion takes years of expensive litigation," Julian smiled, a master chess player cornering a pawn. "And you have no money left to fight a federal battle. I, however, have infinite resources. Here is my offer: Fly to Geneva with me tomorrow, open the vault, hand over the cipher, and I will destroy the forged documents. You walk away clean. Refuse, and I will ruin you."
The pepper spray in my pocket felt utterly useless against a threat of this magnitude. Julian Vance wasn't threatening my physical safety; he was holding my entire identity hostage.
"I need twenty-four hours to pack," I lied, my mind racing for a way out.

"You have twelve," Julian checked the heavy platinum watch on his wrist. "My private jet leaves SFO at noon tomorrow. I will send a car for you. Do not try to run. I have eyes on every exit in this city."
Julian turned and disappeared into the fog, his footsteps completely silent on the wet wood. I stood alone on the dock, the crushing weight of the Caldwell legacy pressing down on my shoulders once again. I had to go to Geneva, but I had absolutely no intention of handing Julian the cipher. I was going to steal it.
