Chapter 17 - The Embassy Run

I waited in the freezing darkness of the storm drain for exactly forty-two minutes. Every distant drip of water sounded like approaching footsteps. The cold was seeping into my bones, but I kept my hand tightly gripped around the hard drive inside my coat.

Finally, a brilliant beam of tactical flashlight cut through the darkness.

"Maya Caldwell?" a crisp, American voice echoed off the concrete walls.

"I'm here!" I shouted, stepping out from behind a concrete pillar.

Two men in dark tactical gear approached me. They didn't wear uniforms, but the earpieces and the way they held themselves screamed elite federal agents.

"I'm Agent Carter, FBI Attaché to the Geneva Embassy. Prosecutor Hayes sent us," the taller man said, quickly scanning the perimeter. "We need to move immediately. The Swiss police have locked down a ten-block radius searching for you."

They escorted me through the labyrinth of the tunnels until we reached an access ladder leading up to a quiet alleyway. A diplomatic vehicle with heavy tinted windows and US flags on the license plates was idling on the street.

We climbed in, and the driver immediately sped off, navigating the chaotic Geneva traffic with aggressive precision.

"Julian Vance’s lawyers are already swarming the police station," Agent Carter said, handing me a heavy blanket. "They are claiming Julian was a victim of a targeted setup, and they are demanding your immediate arrest for corporate espionage."

"He has politicians in his pocket," I warned, wrapping the blanket around my shivering shoulders. "If Julian gets out, he will vanish."

"He's not getting out," Carter smirked. "Hayes utilized an emergency international treaty. Based on the intelligence you recovered, the US Department of Justice has formally indicted Julian Vance for domestic terrorism and grand larceny. The Swiss authorities have agreed to hold him for extradition."

The relief that washed over me was so profound it brought tears to my eyes. For twelve years, I had been a pawn in a terrifying game played by powerful, corrupt men. I had been manipulated, threatened, and nearly destroyed.

But as the heavy iron gates of the United States Embassy swung open, offering absolute, untouchable sanctuary, I finally understood the true weight of my actions. I hadn't just survived the game. I had flipped the board entirely.
