Chapter 18 - The Decryption

The interior of the US Embassy was a chaotic beehive of federal activity. I was immediately ushered into a secure, soundproof conference room located deep within the subterranean levels of the building.

An hour later, Prosecutor Michael Hayes appeared on a massive video conferencing screen, looking thoroughly exhausted but radiating a triumphant energy.

"Maya, you are officially the most dangerous woman in federal jurisdiction," Hayes grinned through the monitor.

"I try my best," I replied dryly, sipping a cup of hot black coffee. I pulled the titanium hard drive from my coat and slid it across the table to an awaiting FBI cyber-technician. "There's the crown jewel. Julian said it contains the ledger for every corrupt official on his payroll."

The technician connected the drive to a highly secure, isolated terminal. For ten minutes, the room was entirely silent, the only sound the frantic clicking of the technician's keyboard.

"The encryption is military-grade," the technician finally reported, frowning at the screen. "But it seems the drive was heavily damaged at some point. The outer casing is intact, but the internal magnetic disks have been corrupted."

My heart plummeted into my stomach. "Corrupted? How? I kept it protected the entire time!"

Hayes leaned closer to the camera, his expression darkening. "Julian Vance is a professional ghost. He wouldn't keep his entire empire on a single, vulnerable hard drive without a failsafe."

"You think he wiped it remotely?" I asked, panic rising.

"No," the technician interrupted, his eyes widening as a string of data suddenly cascaded across his monitor. "It's not wiped. It's partitioned. The drive you recovered is only half of the key. It requires a secondary, physical authentication token to unlock the ledgers."

"A second key?" I groaned, burying my face in my hands. "Where the hell is the second key?"

Hayes looked at me with a grave expression. "Maya, when you were married to Adrian, did he ever gift you anything unusual? A piece of jewelry, a specific watch, a digital keycard?"

I froze. My mind raced back to the final year of my disastrous marriage. Adrian had been increasingly paranoid, constantly checking his safes. But on our fifth anniversary, he had given me something incredibly specific.

"A necklace," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a freight train. "A heavy platinum locket. He told me never to take it off. I left it in a jewelry box in my condo when I finally walked out on him."

"The same condo Julian Vance's men recently tore to shreds?" Hayes asked grimly.

"They didn't find it," I said, my eyes widening with absolute certainty. "Because I didn't leave it in the bedroom. I hid it inside the main ventilation duct in the kitchen. It’s still there."
