Chapter 30 - Unbreakable Peace

|
Sunday evening arrived with a breathtaking Arizona sunset, painting the massive sky in brilliant shades of crushed violet, burnt orange, and deep gold. I sat on the comfortable outdoor sofa on the patio of my North Scottsdale home, a glass of expensive red wine resting on the table beside me.
The air was warm and still, filled with the gentle, rhythmic sound of the water cascading in the pool.
Maya, now a thriving, incredibly articulate two-year-old, was sitting on the stone patio a few feet away, deeply focused on coloring a massive picture in her sketchbook. She was safe, she was brilliant, and she was surrounded by an impenetrable wall of love.
I took a sip of my wine, leaning back into the soft cushions, and let my mind wander back over the chaotic, terrifying, and ultimately magnificent journey of the last few years.
I had walked into a sterile waiting room as a broken, terrified, completely dependent woman. I had been slapped, humiliated, and told that I was absolutely nothing without the man who tormented me.
But I had refused to die in the dark.
I looked at the beautiful home I had purchased with my own money. I thought of the massive, thriving design firm I led, the loyal chosen family that stood fiercely by my side, and the charitable foundation that was actively pulling other women out of the shadows.
I was not defined by the trauma that happened to me. I was defined by the magnificent, towering strength it took to walk back into the light.
"Look, Mommy!" Maya called out, holding up her sketchbook to show me a chaotic, wildly colorful drawing of a sun.

"It is beautiful, my sweet girl," I smiled brilliantly, reaching out to stroke her soft hair. "It is so incredibly bright."
I looked out over the desert horizon, taking a deep, perfectly peaceful breath. The story they had tried to write for me was permanently over. My masterpiece was complete, and this highly beautiful, fiercely protected life was entirely, unconditionally mine.
