Chapter 23 - The Morning After

The morning following the gala, my phone did not stop ringing. The brief, intense confrontation with James had not gone unnoticed by the sharp eyes of Scottsdale's elite. However, instead of the scandal James had likely hoped to cause, the incident had entirely cemented my reputation as a woman of immense poise and untouchable grace.
I sat at my desk in the studio, watching Sarah furiously write down new client inquiries on the massive whiteboard.
"That is three new consultations booked before ten in the morning," Sarah laughed, shaking her head in sheer disbelief. "The wife of the resort owner just called. She loved your dress and your 'unflappable composure,' and she wants you to redesign their massive summer home in Sedona."
I smiled, pouring myself a fresh cup of coffee.
"It seems the high society of Arizona respects a woman who refuses to be bullied," I noted quietly, looking out the large glass windows at the bright morning sun.
"They respect power, Clara," Sarah corrected, walking over and leaning against my desk. "And last night, you showed everyone in that room that you hold all the cards. James looked like a desperate, pathetic fool, and you looked like absolute royalty."
Luke walked into the studio a few minutes later, carrying a sleek leather briefcase and looking incredibly smug.
"Good morning, ladies," Luke beamed, setting his briefcase on the counter. "I just received an incredibly satisfying phone call from the gala organizers."
"What happened?" I asked, highly intrigued.

"James was quietly asked to resign from the board of directors this morning," Luke revealed, his smile widening into a grin. "His erratic behavior last night, combined with the rumors of his failing business ventures, made him a massive liability. He is officially an outcast in the very circles he used to rule."
I leaned back in my chair, taking a slow, deeply satisfying sip of my coffee. The universe was finally balancing the scales, and the view from the top was absolutely breathtaking.
