Chapter 19 - The Digital Fortress

The expansion of the business meant that my personal life also needed an upgrade. I had recently purchased a beautiful, modern Spanish-style home in a highly secure, gated community in North Scottsdale. It was a massive step up from the small apartment I had rented immediately after leaving James, and I wanted to ensure that Maya and I were perfectly protected.
Mark arrived at my new house on a Saturday morning in a heavily loaded black van. He was accompanied by two of his top security technicians, carrying boxes of high-end surveillance equipment.
"This is a gorgeous property, Clara," Mark admired, walking through the massive arched doorway and looking up at the exposed wooden beams in the living room.
"Thank you, Mark," I smiled, bouncing Maya on my hip. "But I need it to be more than gorgeous. I need it to be an absolute fortress."
"That is exactly what we are going to build," Mark promised, pulling out a digital tablet displaying the floor plans of my house.
For the next four hours, Mark and his team transformed my home. They installed invisible, high-definition cameras at every entry point, motion sensors on the perimeter walls, and a state-of-the-art encrypted alarm system that wired directly to Mark’s personal agency and the local police precinct.
"The best part about this system," Mark explained, showing me the control panel on my smartphone, "is the biometric lock on the master bedroom door. If anyone ever breaches the perimeter, you and Maya step inside, lock the door with your fingerprint, and it deploys a solid steel deadbolt that cannot be kicked in."
I looked down at the app on my phone, feeling a profound, heavy wave of absolute relief.

"You always make me feel so safe, Mark," I said quietly, looking up at him.
"You saved yourself, Clara," Mark corrected gently, patting my shoulder. "I am just building the walls to make sure the monsters can never get back in."
