Chapter 29 - The Final Legal Victory

The closure I didn't even realize I was still waiting for arrived on a quiet Friday afternoon. I was sitting in my brand-new corner office in the expanded studio when Luke walked in unannounced. He didn't look like a lawyer bringing professional updates; he looked like a brother carrying excellent personal news.
He closed the glass door behind him and sat down in the velvet chair opposite my desk.
"I just received a heavily detailed report from our private investigators," Luke said, leaning forward and resting his hands on his knees. "I thought you might want to hear it."
"Does it involve James?" I asked, my heart remaining perfectly calm.
"It does," Luke nodded, a deeply satisfied smile spreading across his face. "His business officially filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy this morning. His investors pulled out, the banks seized his remaining properties, and his luxury cars were repossessed yesterday afternoon."
I sat back in my chair, absorbing the reality of his absolute ruin.
"And Chloe?" I asked softly.
"Chloe used the resources from the Vanguard Initiative," Luke confirmed warmly. "She filed a police report for the assault, secured a massive restraining order, and safely relocated out of state last week. James is completely alone, completely broke, and currently under investigation by the state for financial fraud."
A heavy, lingering shadow that had been hiding in the deepest corners of my mind completely vanished. The monster was dead. The dragon was entirely slain, consumed by his own toxic, uncontrollable greed.
"It's over, Clara," Luke whispered, looking at me with immense pride. "The threat is permanently neutralized. He will never, ever be able to hurt you or Maya again."

"Thank you, Luke," I said, a single tear of absolute, final relief escaping my eye. "Thank you for helping me build the fortress."
"You built the fortress, Clara," Luke smiled. "I just handed you the bricks."
