Chapter 9 - The Poisoned Well

The reaction to the leaked security footage was swift and destructive.
By six o'clock that evening, the video of Noelle shutting four-year-old Liam into a dark pantry while Cynthia fed cake to her baby had gone viral across every social media platform. The local news station aired the video on their evening broadcast, complete with expert commentary on child cruelty.
In less than three hours, Noelle's name was wiped from every charitable board in the city. The Atlanta Historical Society issued a public statement condemning her actions and revoking her life membership.
Jeffrey's phone was ringing off the hook with calls from creditors, former business associates, and angry board members demanding his complete resignation from every private club in Georgia.
That night, my phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unsaved local number.
I answered it, keeping my voice neutral. "Hello?"
"Madeline... please," Jeffrey's voice came through the speaker, raspy, broken, and sounding completely defeated. He was breathing heavily, the background noise echoing like he was sitting in a cheap motel room.
"What do you want, Jeffrey?" I asked coldly.
"You destroyed my life," he sobbed into the receiver. "My mother had a panic attack when the news crew showed up at her sister's house. Nobody in this town will even look at us. Cynthia left me an hour ago and took Austin with her!"
"Cynthia left you?" I smiled faintly into the dark room. "How ironic. She abandoned you the second the money ran out."
"Madeline, please... just drop the criminal charges," Jeffrey begged pitifully. "I'll sign the divorce papers. I'll give you full custody. I'll waive all rights to the trust! Just don't let them put me in prison!"
"You should have thought about prison when you let my son starve under your table, Jeffrey," I said harshly. "You are going to face every single consequence you earned."
"You monster!" he screamed, his voice turning shrill. "I made you who you are!"
May you like
"No, Jeffrey," I corrected him softly. "I built an empire. You were just a weak man who mistook my absence for weakness."
I hung up the phone and blocked his number forever.
