Chapter 12 - The Shattered Illusion

|

The courtroom went completely quiet as the clerk handed the document to Judge Wilkins.

The judge scanned the lab results, her cold expression softening into a look of dry pity as she looked down at Jeffrey.

"Mr. Carter," Judge Wilkins said, her voice dripping with quiet disdain. "It appears your petition for child support regarding the minor Austin is rendered moot. According to certified DNA results from Miami Laboratories, you are not the biological father."

Jeffrey froze. His entire body went rigid as if he had been struck by lightning.

"What?" he gasped, his voice cracking. "No... no, that's impossible. Cynthia said... she said Austin was mine!"

"The test was ordered by Miss Cynthia Vance eighteen months ago, sir," Marcus interjected calmly, turning to face Jeffrey directly. "The biological father is a real estate developer in Fort Lauderdale to whom Miss Vance has been sending fifty thousand dollars a month from your embezzled corporate funds."

"No... NO!" Jeffrey screamed, pushing his chair back so hard it clattered against the wood floor. "CYNTHIA!"

Noelle gasped in the gallery, clutching her chest as if she couldn't breathe. "She... she tricked us? We gave up our home for a bastard child?!"

"Order in the court!" Judge Wilkins shouted, slamming her gavel repeatedly. "Bailiffs, restrain the respondent!"

Two armed bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing Jeffrey's arms as he broke down into violent, hysterical sobs, collapsing onto his knees on the courtroom floor. He had given up his wife, starved his true son, ruined his reputation, and destroyed his family—all for a lie.

I stood up slowly, picking up my handbag, and looked down at the man sobbing at my feet.

"You traded a kingdom for dust, Jeffrey," I whispered as I walked past him toward the exit. "Enjoy the mess you made."
