Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Shadows

Rain began to pelt the windshield of my rental SUV as I buckled Liam into the brand-new car seat I had purchased at the airport. He sat huddled in his oversized coat, staring at his shoes, entirely unaccustomed to being inside a vehicle.
"Mommy?" he whispered, his voice small against the thunder outside.
"Yes, my love?" I replied, pulling out of the Buckhead estate's driveway.
"Are we going to the dark room now?"
My hands tightened on the steering wheel until my knuckles turned stark white. "No, baby. No more dark rooms. Ever again."
Twenty minutes later, I pulled up to the greasy-spoon diner on 5th Street. The neon sign flickered through the heavy Atlanta rain. I carried Liam inside, wrapping him in my trench coat, and scanned the dimly lit vinyl booths.
In the farthest corner sat a woman wearing a heavy dark hoodie and round glasses. As I approached, she pulled down her hood.
It was Maria, the live-in nanny I had hired for Liam before I left for England.
"Mrs. Vance," Maria whispered, her eyes brimming with tears as she saw Liam. "Oh, thank God you're back."
"Maria?" I sat down across from her, settling Liam beside me. "They told me you quit last year to move back to Texas."
"They lied to you," Maria spat bitterly, reaching into her purse and pulling out a silver flash drive. "Noelle fired me six months after you left because I refused to lock Liam in the utility closet when Cynthia moved in."
My stomach turned to lead. "Cynthia moved in?"
"She moved into your master bedroom three months after you flew to London," Maria explained, her voice trembling with anger. "They took Liam's nursery and gave it to Cynthia's new baby. They moved Liam into the small maid's room, and when he cried for you, Noelle told him you ran away because he was a bad child."
Liam buried his face in my side, his tiny hands clutching my sweater.
"I tried to stop them, Mrs. Vance," Maria continued, sliding the flash drive across the table. "They threatened to report my brother to immigration if I went to the police. But I saved every video clip from the home security system before they cut my access."

I looked down at the small silver drive. "What's on this, Maria?"
"The evidence you need to take everything from them," Maria replied grimly. "And the proof that baby Austin isn't the only secret Jeffrey is hiding."
