Within two hours, my coastal estate was placed under total security lockdown.
Ex-military security guards equipped with night-vision gear patrolled the perimeter walls, while laser motion sensors were activated along the beachfront. I sat in the living room, holding a sleeping Liam tightly against my chest, my eyes locked on the front entrance.
Marcus arrived by private helicopter at midnight, bringing with him a team of cyber-forensic experts.
"We traced the IP address of the hacker who breached the London server," Marcus said, setting a encrypted tablet on the coffee table. "It wasn't a standard corporate espionage job, Madeline. The breach originated from an offshore server in Zurich, Switzerland."
"Zurich?" I frowned, my mind racing. "We don't have any business operations in Switzerland."
"No, but your late father did," Marcus revealed, his face deadly serious. "Twenty years ago, before Vance International was formed, your father had a silent partner. A man named Julian Vance—his estranged half-brother."
I stared at Marcus in absolute disbelief. "My father never told me he had a brother."
"Because Julian was banished from the family business after a massive corporate betrayal," Marcus explained, pulling up an old, black-and-white photograph of a sharp-featured man with icy grey eyes. "Julian relocated to Europe and built a massive, unregulated private equity firm. When your father died, Julian claimed he was owed fifty percent of the Vance trust."
The pieces began falling together like jagged shards of glass.

"Jeffrey didn't just embezzle three million dollars from the London expansion fund," I whispered, the terrifying truth dawning on me. "He was selling company secrets to Julian Vance!"
"And Noelle was the intermediary," Marcus confirmed softly. "Julian wasn't funding Cynthia's luxury lifestyle. He was paying Noelle and Jeffrey to keep Liam isolated and weak so they could eventually use the boy as leverage to claim the family trust!"
