Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

|

Six months later, the justice system completed its work.

Following a thorough investigation by the Fulton County District Attorney and federal financial auditors, Jeffrey Carter was sentenced to four years in state prison for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and felony child neglect.

Noelle Carter was ordered to complete five hundred hours of community service and pay restitution to Liam's medical recovery trust, her social standing in Atlanta completely destroyed forever.

Cynthia was arrested at an airport in Florida, extradited back to Georgia, and charged with grand larceny and wire fraud for her scheme involving the embezzled London funds.

On a warm afternoon in May, I stood on the balcony of my new oceanfront estate in Savannah, Georgia.

The salt breeze blew through my hair as I watched Liam running across the lush green lawn, holding a bright yellow kite, laughing as Maria chased him through the sunshine. He looked strong, happy, and entirely free from the terror that had once consumed his tiny heart.

Marcus walked out onto the balcony, holding two glasses of lemonade.

"The final papers were signed this morning, Madeline," Marcus said, handing me a glass. "Vance-Carter Holdings has been officially rebranded as Vance International. Stock prices are up forty percent, and the London branch is thriving."

"And Jeffrey?" I asked softly, taking a sip.

"He began his sentence at Hays State Prison yesterday," Marcus replied calmly. "He won't be eligible for parole for three years."

I watched my son jump into the air, his kite soaring high into the clear blue sky, untethered and beautiful.

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, feeling a deep, profound peace wash over my soul. "For everything."

I walked down the balcony steps, leaving the corporate world behind for the afternoon, and ran onto the grass to catch my son in a tight, loving embrace.

"Mommy!" Liam squealed with delight, wrapping his soft little arms around my neck. "Look how high my kite is flying!"

"I see it, my love," I kissed his cheek, smiling through tears of pure joy. "It's higher than the stars."
