Chapter 8 - The Cornered Snake

Two days passed. I spent every hour focused entirely on Liam.
I brought in Dr. Evelyn Thorne, a world-renowned child psychologist who specialized in early childhood trauma. We sat in the sunny playroom of my new penthouse apartment, watching Liam slowly play with a set of wooden building blocks.
"He shows classic signs of severe emotional suppression," Dr. Thorne explained quietly, taking notes on her clipboard. "He was trained to minimize his presence to avoid angering the adults. The fact that he hid under the table was a defense mechanism to make himself invisible."
Tears pricked my eyes, but I swallowed them down. "Can he recover?"
"Children are remarkably resilient, Mrs. Vance," Dr. Thorne smiled gently. "With love, security, and absolute consistency, he will thrive. But you must ensure his environment remains completely safe from his abusers."
"He will never see them again," I promised fiercely.
My phone rang. It was Marcus.
"Madeline, we have a situation," Marcus said, his voice tense. "Jeffrey and his mother just filed an emergency petition for temporary child custody and spousal support. They are claiming you abandoned Liam for two years and suffer from severe corporate instability."
"On what grounds?" I asked, my voice dropping.
"Cynthia wrote a signed affidavit claiming she was Liam's primary caregiver and that you came home, attacked Jeffrey, and snatched the child illegally," Marcus revealed. "They're trying to spin this to the media. Local news channels just picked up the story."
I looked at Liam, who was currently building a small wooden tower, looking up at me with a soft, trusting smile.
"They want a public fight, Marcus?" I asked softly.

"They are desperate for money, Madeline. Jeffrey's bank accounts were frozen this morning. He has nothing left to lose."
"Good," I said, a dangerous chill filling my chest. "Release Maria's security footage to the judge and the press. Let the world see what kind of 'caregivers' they really are."
