Chapter 11 - The Reckoning in Court

The Fulton County Family Courthouse was swarming with reporters when our black SUV pulled up to the curb.
I walked up the stone steps wearing a tailored beige trench coat, flanked by Marcus and two private security guards. Inside Courtroom 402, Jeffrey was already seated at the defense table.
He looked pathetic. His once-expensive suit was wrinkled and unpressed, his eyes were bloodshot, and dark circles shadowed his hollow cheeks. Noelle sat in the gallery behind him, wearing dark sunglasses, trying to hide her face from the spectators.
Cynthia was nowhere to be found.
The judge, Honorable Sarah Wilkins, took her bench with an expression of severe annoyance. She slammed her gavel down, her eyes locking onto Jeffrey.
"Mr. Carter," Judge Wilkins began sternly. "I have reviewed the emergency evidence submitted by the petitioner, including video logs, financial audits, and medical reports regarding the minor child, Liam Carter."
Jeffrey's attorney stood up nervously. "Your Honor, my client was under immense stress while running the domestic operations—"
"Silence, counsel!" Judge Wilkins barked, slamming her hand on her desk. "I have been on the bench for twenty-two years, and I have rarely seen a more despicable display of parental negligence. The video footage of that innocent child locked in a pantry while you lived in luxury is appalling."
Jeffrey lowered his head, his hands trembling on the table.
"As of this moment," Judge Wilkins continued, "all parental rights of Jeffrey Carter are indefinitely suspended. A permanent restraining order is issued prohibiting Mr. Carter and Mrs. Noelle Carter from approaching within one thousand feet of Liam Vance."
"Your Honor, please!" Noelle wailed from the gallery. "He's my grandson!"
"One more outburst, ma'am, and I will have you removed and held in contempt!" the judge warned fiercely. "Furthermore, the court awards sole legal and physical custody to Madeline Vance, along with immediate repossession of all disputed marital assets."

"There's one more matter, Your Honor," Marcus said smoothly, stepping forward and placing a sealed manila envelope on the clerk's desk. "A certified document regarding the paternity of the child, Austin."
Jeffrey frowned, looking up at Marcus in confusion. "What... what paternity?"
