Three weeks before I went into labor, I had discovered a anomaly in Whitmore Development’s regional accounting ledger.
Six hundred and forty thousand dollars had been disbursed over five months to a firm called 'VSR Consulting' for vague services listed as "site strategy and acquisition logistics." The payment authorizations bore Mark’s personal digital signature.
I had run a corporate registry search on VSR Consulting that same night. The sole registered officer and owner was Vanessa Reed.
Instead of confronting Mark immediately, I had brought the files to Rachel. Together with a private forensic accountant, we began pulling bank records, hotel registries, and credit card statements.
The investigation revealed a sickening picture: Mark hadn't just been cheating; he had been systematically stripping Whitmore Development of operational capital to fund a lavish double life—buying Vanessa an oceanfront apartment, luxury jewelry, and private weekend getaways.
Worse still, on the very night my labor started, Mark had used our shared home tablet to search specific legal queries: "Spouse medical incapacity voting rights," "How to override family trust during coma," and "Emergency power of attorney templates."
I had taken photographs of his search history while he was in the shower and texted them directly to Rachel from the back of the ambulance while experiencing my first contractions.

"He's a fool who thinks confidence replaces intelligence," Rachel replied, opening her laptop. "Now, we let him play his last card, so we can cut his hands off entirely."
