Chapter 5 - The Secret Recording

|

What none of them realized was that thirty minutes before they walked into my room, I had used the hands-free voice control on my smartphone resting on the bedside table.

When the doctor had first delivered the news about my spinal hematoma, a deep, instinctual alarm had sounded in my mind. I had known Mark was acting strange for months—asking unusual questions about trust documents, requesting duplicate keys to the corporate safe, and suddenly taking an interest in my life insurance policies.

While the nurses were busy checking my vitals, I had quietly voiced a command to my phone: "Hey Siri, call Rachel Kim."

Rachel was not just my personal attorney; she was a ruthless corporate litigator who had protected my father's business for twenty years. When Rachel answered, I had whispered two words: "Record this."

Rachel had immediately initiated a secure, encrypted audio recording on her end, keeping the line open while instructing me to slide my phone under the edge of my pillow, hidden beneath the white linen slip.

Every single word spoken in this room—Vanessa’s taunts about being naked under the coat, Mark’s confession about his two-year affair, Diane’s demands for proxy votes, and their threats to use social services—was being broadcast live to Rachel’s office and recorded on a secure server.

I looked down at the documents resting on my blanket.

Keep them talking, I told myself. Let them dig their own graves so deep they can never climb out.

"I need a moment to read them," I feigned hesitation, letting my voice quiver slightly. "If I sign... do you promise to leave Lily alone?"

Diane sneered, thrusting the pen toward my face. "You don't negotiate, Claire. You obey."
