Chapter 7 - The Interruption

"Please keep talking, Mark," a sharp, clear voice echoed from the doorway. "You are making this remarkably easy for the grand jury."
Mark spun around, his jaw dropping in absolute shock.
Standing in the entrance was Rachel Kim. She wore a tailored black pantsuit, her silver hair pulled back in a flawless knot, holding a clear plastic evidence bag in her left hand and her phone in her right.
Beside her stood two uniformed hospital security officers and the unit's head charge nurse.
"Who the hell are you?!" Diane demanded, stepping forward angrily. "This is a private family discussion! Security, remove this woman!"
"I am Claire Whitmore’s legal counsel," Rachel stated coldly, stepping directly into the room and positioning herself like a human shield between Mark and my bed. "And this 'private family discussion' ceased to be private thirty minutes ago when my client voice-activated an open line to my office."
Vanessa’s face went completely chalk-white. She frantically clutched the lapels of her camel coat shut, backing into the corner beside the medical monitors.
"You... you recorded us?" Mark stammered, stepping away from the bassinet.
"Every single syllable," Rachel replied, raising her phone. "Including your confession of corporate embezzlement, your threats regarding child custody, your attempted extortion under medical duress, and your mother’s physical assault on my client."

The charge nurse rushed past Mark, immediately grabbing Lily’s bassinet and wheeling it back to the safe side of my bed. She checked my reddened cheek, her eyes blazing with fury at Diane.
"Security," the charge nurse ordered sternly. "Escort these people out of this room immediately. Lock down the floor."
