Chapter 13 - The Audio Evidence

|

"Gerald, don't listen to her!" Mark yelled frantically, waving his hands toward the screen. "She's heavily medicated! She’s suffering from severe postpartum psychosis! Mute her feed!"

"Nobody is muting anything," Gerald barked, slamming his hand on the table. "Sit down, Mark!"

Rachel stepped into the camera frame beside my bed. "Members of the board, I am Rachel Kim, Chief Legal Counsel for the Whitmore Family Trust. Before you vote on any motions, we require you to listen to an audio file recorded eighteen hours ago in this hospital room."

Rachel pressed a key on her laptop.

The audio track filled the boardroom with horrifying clarity.

Diane’s voice echoed through the room first: "A helpless woman with postpartum confusion can’t run a company. Sign!"

Then came Vanessa’s cruel, taunting voice: "We planned around it!"

Then the sharp, sickening sound of Diane’s hand slapping across my face, followed immediately by Lily’s terrified screams.

Mark’s voice boomed through the speakers next, loud and merciless: "Who will believe a paralyzed woman? Sign the papers, Claire, or I swear to God I will make sure you never hold that baby again!"

Silence fell over the boardroom like a heavy lead curtain.

Board member Eleanor Vance covered her mouth in absolute horror. Gerald Price’s face turned from pale white to a deep, dangerous crimson. He slowly turned his head to glare at Mark, who was standing frozen at the head of the table, his skin completely drained of color.

"You... you recorded that?" Mark whispered, his knees visibly shaking.

"That audio has already been delivered to the District Attorney's office," Rachel informed the board. "And we are just getting started."
