Chapter 8 - Swept from the Room

|

"You can't do this!" Diane shrieked as a six-foot-four security officer grabbed her by the arm, forcing her toward the hallway. "I am the child's grandmother! We have legal rights!"

"You have the right to remain silent, ma'am," Rachel countered smoothly. "Which I strongly suggest you begin exercising."

Mark lunged toward my pillow, his hands outstretched in a desperate attempt to grab my phone hidden beneath the linen.

"Touch that pillow, Mark," Rachel warned, stepping into his path without flinching, "and I will personally ensure the district attorney adds destruction of evidence and felony burglary to your indictment before sunrise."

Mark froze, his hand hovering inches from my bed. He looked down at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and unbridled hatred.

"You tricked me," he whispered, his teeth clenched.

"You destroyed yourself, Mark," I replied, my voice steady despite the pain throb in my cheek. "Get out of my room."

The two security guards grabbed Mark and Vanessa, hauling them backward through the doorway into the corridor. Vanessa was screaming obscenities, trying to keep her coat closed while being marched past staring nurses and stunned patients.

The heavy door clicked shut, and the magnetic lock engaged with a loud BEEP.

The room fell into profound silence, broken only by Lily’s soft whimpers. The charge nurse gently lifted my daughter and placed her onto my chest. Feeling her warmth against my skin, the dam inside me finally broke, and quiet tears spilled over my lashes.

Rachel sat on the edge of my mattress, taking my trembling hand in hers.

"You did incredible, Claire," Rachel whispered gently. "We have them. We have them completely."
