Chapter 16 - The Handcuffs and the Chaos

|

The video feed captured the glorious collapse of Mark’s world in real-time.

As the corporate security officers grabbed Mark’s arms, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open. Three detectives from the police department stepped inside, holding felony arrest warrants.

"Mark Mercer?" the lead detective asked loudly. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate forgery, and conspiracy to commit extortion."

"No! Get your hands off me!" Mark shrieked, thrashing against the officers as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.

From the hallway outside the boardroom, a high-pitched scream echoed through the audio feed.

Officers were escorting Vanessa Reed through the lobby in handcuffs, having served a warrant on her at her VSR Consulting office down the street. Her oceanfront condo, her luxury vehicle, and her bank accounts had all been frozen under a court-ordered asset seizure.

At that exact moment, a separate police unit arrived at Diane’s residence, serving her with felony warrants for third-degree assault, coercion, and witness intimidation.

Mark was marched out of the boardroom in disgrace, his face pressed toward the carpet as employees lined the hallway, taking videos on their cell phones as their former COO was hauled away in chains.

Rachel closed the video feed screen with a satisfying click.

I lay back against my pillows, taking a long, deep breath. The physical pain in my spine was still there, but the suffocating weight that had crushed my chest for eleven years was finally gone.
