Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Confrontation

At 11:55 AM, Rachel entered my hospital room carrying a high-definition video monitor mounted on a rolling stand, accompanied by a technician who set up a secure, encrypted satellite feed.
On the screen, the executive boardroom of Whitmore Development materialized in crisp detail.
The massive mahogany conference table was surrounded by the seven independent board members—men and women who had known my father for decades and whom I had served alongside for eleven years.
At the head of the table sat Mark. He had arranged a stack of forged documents in front of him, looking every bit the triumphant corporate conqueror. He was currently addressing Gerald Price, the seventy-year-old board chair.
"...and so, given Claire’s tragic neurological state," Mark was saying, his voice oozing artificial grief, "I must humbly step forward to assume full executive authority to prevent our stock value from plunging."
"Is there any official medical documentation regarding her condition, Mark?" Gerald asked, his brow furrowed with deep skepticism.
"I have her signed power of attorney right here, Gerald," Mark said, holding up the forged paper. "Claire recognized that she is no longer capable of—"
"I am entirely capable, Mark," my voice boomed through the boardroom’s state-of-the-art surround sound speakers.
Mark jumped out of his leather chair as if he had been electrocuted.
The video feed shifted, expanding my hospital bed onto the fifty-inch main display wall in the boardroom. Beside me, sitting tall in my hospital gown with Lily cradled securely in my arm, I looked directly into the camera lens.

"Claire?!" Gerald exclaimed, standing up from his chair. "My God, child, how are you?"
"I am recovering, Gerald," I said clearly. "And I am here to stop a corporate takeover by a criminal thief."
