Chapter 9 - The Confrontation

Three days later, I was finally moved out of intensive care and into a private recovery suite. Grant, assuming I was weak and vulnerable, arrived at the hospital unannounced. He didn't come alone. He brought his aggressive defense attorney, and, to my absolute disgust, he brought my parents. They expected to find a frightened, isolated woman surrounded by loud machines, ready to surrender.

Instead, they found me sitting completely upright in a chair, off the heavy oxygen, wearing my own clothes. Mara was standing firmly beside me, her briefcase open. Two plainclothes detectives were standing quietly by the window, observing everything.

My mother barged into the room first, pointing a manicured finger aggressively at my face.

"Tell these officers this is a private family matter right now, Evelyn," she demanded.

Mara calmly placed a thick, red folder on the small table between us.

"Massive wire fraud involving federally insured lenders is not a family matter, ma'am," Mara stated, her voice like ice. "It is a federal felony."

My father instantly went pale, taking a step backward toward the door.

Grant recovered his composure first. He looked at the detectives and offered his charming, fake smile.

"Gentlemen, please," Grant said smoothly. "My wife is heavily medicated. She is confused and lashing out because of the accident."

The attending physician, who had just entered to check my vitals, stepped forward.

"Mrs. Hart’s cognition is perfectly intact," the doctor stated clearly. "She is not confused."
