Chapter 3 - The Breaking Point

I stared at the ceiling, the harsh fluorescent lights blurring through my tears.

My father finally spoke, his sigh heavy with profound disappointment. Not in the man who had nearly killed me, but in me, for causing a disruption.

"You chose this marriage, Evelyn," my father said sharply. "Now face it like an adult. We cannot get involved in domestic squabbles."

Behind their harsh voices, I could clearly hear the distinct clinking of expensive champagne glasses. They were celebrating. They were celebrating the massive, luxurious house they planned to close on that very week—a massive, gated property with imported marble floors, an infinity pool, and a price tag they absolutely could not afford without my financial backing.

I had personally guaranteed their massive mortgage because their credit history was incredibly weak. They had guilted me into it, calling it a "dutiful daughter’s responsibility" to take care of her parents.

I closed my eyes, the physical pain in my chest suddenly eclipsed by a deep, suffocating betrayal.

"I understand," I said quietly, my voice devoid of any emotion.

I didn't argue. I didn't beg. I simply ended the call.

I opened the secure banking application on my phone, my fingers moving with a terrifying, absolute clarity. I sent one single, encrypted message to my personal attorney, Mara Voss:

"Withdraw my mortgage guarantee for my parents immediately. Freeze every single financial authorization carrying my signature. Also, pull the internal financial records from Hart Development. I’m ready to use them."

Grant truly believed I was hopelessly trapped in a hospital bed. My parents foolishly believed my loyalty to them was unconditional, regardless of their cruelty.

Neither of them remembered the most important fact: I was the senior compliance attorney who had meticulously structured every single company, trust, loan, and property they all heavily depended on.
