Chapter 1 - The First Breath

The last thing I heard before my husband’s fist crushed the air from my lungs was my mother’s voice echoing in my memory:
"Marriage takes sacrifice, Evelyn."
By the time I woke in the stark, blinding white of an intensive care unit, the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor my only companion, I finally understood whose life she had always expected me to sacrifice. It certainly wasn't hers. It definitely wasn't Grant's. It was always mine.
My name is Evelyn Hart. For seven long, agonizing years, I had helped my husband, Grant, meticulously build the flawless image of a perfect marriage. To the outside world, we were the golden couple of the city’s real estate scene. He was the ambitious, charming developer; I was the brilliant, supportive compliance attorney.
But behind closed doors, I wore long sleeves to summer family dinners to hide the handprints on my forearms. I blamed ugly, purple bruises on cabinet doors left open in the dark. I smiled, my face a carefully constructed mask, while he rudely corrected my stories at dinner parties, controlled my credit cards down to the penny, and constantly reminded me of my place.
"No one would ever believe a fragile, emotional woman over a highly respected real-estate developer," he would whisper, leaning in close so no one else could hear.
That specific night, the night everything finally broke, he had come home furious. His face was flushed, his tie already loosened aggressively. I had done the one thing I was never supposed to do: I had questioned him.
"You’re auditing me now?" he asked, his voice low and dangerous.
"I’m asking where eighty thousand dollars went from our joint account," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.

His charming smile vanished instantly. The first blow knocked me violently into the heavy marble kitchen island. The next sent me crashing to the hardwood floor. When I tried to crawl desperately toward my phone on the counter, he kicked my ribs until I heard something inside me crack.
"You have nothing without me," he whispered, standing over my broken body.
