Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

What Grant didn't know was that a seasoned police detective was standing perfectly still behind the half-closed privacy curtain on the other side of my bed. The detective was holding a small digital recorder, capturing every single word with my explicit, documented consent.
Grant noticed the detective’s polished black shoes beneath the curtain a fraction of a second too late.
His handsome face tightened, a brief flash of genuine panic crossing his features, but his endless arrogance quickly rescued him. He stood up straight, adjusting his expensive tie.
"Officer," Grant said smoothly, forcing a laugh. "This is all a terrible misunderstanding. My wife is heavily medicated and confused."
"No," I whispered, my voice finally finding its strength. "This is documentation."
The detective stepped out from behind the curtain, his expression utterly unreadable. Grant didn't stay to chat. He left the room immediately after his high-priced defense attorney arrived, still blindly convinced he could easily intimidate me into silence once I was discharged.
At exactly nine o'clock, my cell phone began to ring. It was my mother. She called six times in a row, desperate and furious. The seventh time, I finally pressed answer.
"What did you do?!" she screamed into the receiver, her voice shrill enough to make me wince. "The lender just called! They canceled our closing completely!"
"I formally withdrew my guarantee," I replied calmly.
"You promised us that house, Evelyn!"
"You promised me a safe home when I was bleeding," I countered.
May you like
"That is entirely different, and you know it!" she shrieked.
"Not anymore."
