Chapter 10 - The Recordings

I reached over and pressed a single button on my tablet. The room fell dead silent as Grant’s own voice filled the small hospital suite.
"Tell the police you fell down the stairs, Evelyn. Don't make me angry again."
Grant's jaw clenched, his eyes darting nervously toward the detectives.
Then, I played an older recording, one I had secretly captured months ago when they thought I wasn't listening.
"Your father moves the money offshore," Grant's voice boasted on the tape. "Your mother invoices us for fake consulting to wash it clean. You just sign whatever paperwork I put in front of you."
My parents stared at Grant in absolute horror, realizing he had just implicated them completely.
"You recorded me?" Grant said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer panic.
"I survived you," I replied coldly. "There is a difference."
Mara opened the thick red folder and began reading the formal declarations.
"The board of directors met this morning," Mara announced. "They voted unanimously to remove Grant Hart as chief executive officer, effective immediately, citing the trust’s specific misconduct clause. His company access is revoked, his salary is terminated, his corporate expense accounts are frozen, and he has forty-eight hours to vacate the corporate residence."

Grant stood frozen, his entire empire vaporizing in less than a minute.
"Furthermore," Mara continued relentlessly, "civil suits have officially been filed to recover all misappropriated funds. And the primary bank has referred the altered loan documents directly to the FBI for criminal investigation."
