Chapter 7 - The Final Warning

My father abruptly seized the phone from my mother. His voice was cold, authoritative, and dripping with entitlement.

"Evelyn, this little tantrum ends right now," my father demanded. "Fix this banking error by noon, or you are no longer our daughter."

I looked through the wide glass wall of the intensive care unit. In the hallway, Mara, the detective, and a senior forensic accountant were huddled together, intensely reviewing the massive files I had unlocked for them. They were tracing the stolen money right back to my parents' accounts.

"You made that decision last night, Dad," I said quietly, ending the call for the final time.

By mid-afternoon, the financial dominoes began to fall with catastrophic speed. The federal bank had officially frozen every single account connected to the suspicious transfers I had flagged. The nervous board of directors at Hart Development, tipped off by Mara, immediately placed Grant on indefinite emergency leave pending a full investigation.

The title company suspended three of his major commercial property sales. A primary lender formally reported his altered financial statements to the federal authorities.

Grant began calling my phone incessantly from unknown numbers, realizing his empire was suddenly crumbling.

"You think you’re clever, Evelyn?" he hissed in one particularly vicious voicemail. "You think you can ruin me? Everything is in my name. You walk away with nothing."

I listened to the voicemail and actually smiled through the pain of my broken ribs. That was his final, most arrogant mistake.
