Chapter 42 - The Grand Opening

|
The grand opening of the National Art Exhibition was a spectacular, breathtaking success. By seven o'clock in the evening, the gallery was packed with art critics, wealthy patrons, local politicians, and dozens of reporters holding flashing cameras. A classical string quartet played softly in the corner, and waiters moved gracefully through the crowd offering champagne and hors d'oeuvres.
Maya looked absolutely radiant. She wore a simple, elegant black dress that perfectly contrasted with the vibrant, chaotic colors of her paintings. She was surrounded by a massive crowd of admirers, confidently answering questions from a prominent art critic about her technique and her inspirations.
I stood near the center of the room, my heart swelling with immense pride as I watched her shine. She was entirely in her element, completely untethered from the trauma of her past.
"She is the star of the show," Sarah Jenkins said, walking up beside me with a glass of sparkling water. "The foundation director just told me that three private collectors have already placed massive bids on her charcoal series."
"It is exactly what she deserves," I smiled, keeping a watchful eye on the main entrance.
Marcus was stationed near the lobby doors, dressed in a sharp black suit, his posture relaxed but highly alert. The trap was set, and the bait was waiting.

At exactly eight o'clock, the heavy glass doors of the gallery swung open. Arthur Pendelton walked in, flanked by a junior associate. He wore a smug, entitled smirk, entirely oblivious to the fact that his legal empire had already crumbled into dust. He scanned the room, ignoring the beautiful artwork, and immediately began walking toward the museum director, who was standing near the press pool.
Marcus caught my eye from across the room and gave a single, sharp nod. The final act was about to begin.
