Chapter 16 - The Raid|

We didn't go get ice cream. Instead, Marcus drove us directly back to the comforting familiarity of our own house, finally disabling the heavy, suffocating security protocols and alarm systems now that the immediate threat was actively being neutralized by the police. Maya ran inside, eager to get back to her own comfortable room, her books, and her own toys. I stood frozen by the kitchen window, nervously gripping my phone in my sweaty hand, waiting agonizingly for the promised call from Detective Reynolds.

The wait was pure torture. Every passing minute felt like a grueling hour. I turned on the local news channel in the living room, keeping the volume low so as not to alert Maya, but keeping my eyes glued to the screen. At exactly 2:15 PM, a bright red "BREAKING NEWS" banner flashed across the screen.

Live, shaky helicopter footage showed a massive fleet of black police SUVs, armored tactical vehicles, and heavily armed SWAT teams completely surrounding the luxury high-rise building in the very center of the city's financial district. Richard Sterling’s impenetrable penthouse.

"They're moving in," Marcus noted quietly, standing solidly behind me and watching the chaotic scene unfold on the television screen.

The news anchor's voice was filled with frantic, breathless excitement. "We are getting live, unconfirmed reports of a major, high-stakes police operation currently underway at the primary residence of disgraced billionaire Richard Sterling. Authorities have entirely barricaded the street, and heavily armed tactical units have been seen breaching the main lobby..."

Ten agonizing minutes later, my phone finally rang, vibrating violently against the granite counter. It was Reynolds.

"We got him, Elena," Reynolds said, breathing heavily into the receiver, the sound of sirens blaring in the background. "He was locked in his private office, desperately trying to shred documents and wipe hard drives. We secured the computers and slapped the steel cuffs on him. He tried to fight back, screaming at the top of his lungs about his lawyers and his rights, but it’s over. He’s sitting in the back of my cruiser right now, heading to central booking."

"And Vance?" I asked, my voice trembling with profound, overwhelming relief.

"The FBI just raided Vance's prestigious law firm downtown," Reynolds chuckled darkly. "Seems your friend Marcus's deep financial digging uncovered a whole lot of other massive corporate crimes Vance was happily hiding for other wealthy clients. The man is going to be spending the rest of his natural life in a federal penitentiary."

I hung up the phone and leaned heavily against the kitchen counter, burying my face in my trembling hands. The tears that finally came were not tears of fear, sorrow, or despair, but of absolute, overwhelming, and complete release. The long nightmare was finally, truly over. The dark shadow that had been looming over my family for a year had been violently dragged into the harsh, unforgiving light of justice.
