Chapter 11 - Enter Marcus Cole|

I left Arthur Vance's corner office feeling a sickening, heavy mixture of boiling rage and icy terror. The thinly veiled threat confirmed everything I suspected in my gut. Richard Sterling was actively pulling the strings from the shadows, using his vast, seemingly infinite wealth to hire ghosts and fixers to do his dirty work. I knew Detective Reynolds was doing absolutely everything he could legally do, but the police department was bound by strict red tape, protocol, and the slow process of acquiring warrants. I needed someone who operated outside those frustrating restrictions. I needed a professional who could match Sterling's ruthlessness.
That evening, Reynolds met me at a quiet, dimly lit, 24-hour diner on the industrial edge of town. He slid a plain, unmarked manila folder across the sticky formica table.
"His name is Marcus Cole," Reynolds said quietly, taking a long sip of his bitter black coffee. "Ex-military intelligence, Special Forces, transitioned into private security and independent investigation about five years ago. He's not cheap, and he certainly doesn't play by the standard police rulebook. But he gets undeniable results, and more importantly, he has a deep-seated hatred for arrogant men like Richard Sterling who think money puts them above the law."
I opened the folder cautiously. Inside was a brief, highly redacted resume and a photograph of a ruggedly handsome man with sharp, deeply observant eyes and a faint, jagged scar running along his strong jawline.
"Will he actually be able to find out who is stalking us?" I asked, looking up at Reynolds, desperate for a shred of hope.
"Marcus won't just find him," Reynolds promised, his tone grim but reassuring. "He'll trace the dirty money back to the original source. If Sterling is funding this harassment campaign, Marcus will dig up the buried financial records the FBI completely missed during their initial audit. But you need to trust him completely. When he gives you an order regarding your safety, you follow it without question."

I called the secure number in the file the moment I got back into the safety of my car. Marcus answered on the very first ring, his voice calm and professional. Within two hours, he was standing in the center of my living room. He was imposing in person, tall and muscular, wearing dark, tactical clothing that seemed to naturally blend into the shadows of the evening.
"I've already swept the entire exterior perimeter of your house," Marcus said, his voice deep and steady, instantly putting my frayed nerves slightly at ease. "You don't have any active listening devices or hidden cameras, but you have a massive blind spot near the rear fence line. I'm setting up encrypted, military-grade motion sensors tonight. From this moment on, nobody gets within a hundred feet of you or your daughter without me knowing about it."
