Chapter 12 - The Sabotaged Brakes|

The next few days settled into a tense, highly unnatural rhythm. Marcus practically moved into our spare guest bedroom, rapidly transforming it into a high-tech surveillance hub with multiple glowing monitors displaying live, encrypted feeds from the hidden cameras he had meticulously installed around our property. Maya, blissfully unaware of the true, terrifying extent of the danger we were in, thought Marcus was just a specialized security consultant hired to test my architectural firm's new smart-home designs. She actually liked him immensely, often dragging him into the kitchen to show him her latest vibrant watercolor paintings, which he praised with genuine, surprising warmth and patience.

It was Saturday afternoon. Maya was sitting happily at the kitchen table, painting a beautiful picture of a bright orange sunset over a lake, while I nervously paced the length of the living room, unable to shake my anxiety. Marcus was outside in the driveway, conducting his routine, incredibly thorough inspection of my car before I was supposed to drive to the grocery store for weekly supplies.

Suddenly, the heavy back door swung open. Marcus stepped inside, his expression dark, severe, and utterly humorless. He walked straight to the kitchen island and held up a small, greasy metal component in his black-gloved hand.

"What is that?" I asked, my heart immediately jumping into my throat, my pacing coming to a dead halt.

"It's a bleeder valve from your main brake line," Marcus said grimly, placing it carefully on a clean paper towel on the granite counter, as if it were a live grenade. "Someone snuck onto the property late last night, during the three-minute window when the motion sensors were rebooting for a firmware update. They managed to bypass the street cameras, crawled under your SUV, and loosened it precisely enough to drain the fluid slowly. If you had driven to the store today, your brakes would have completely failed the exact moment you hit the highway off-ramp."

The blood instantly drained from my face. My knees grew incredibly weak, and I had to grab the sharp edge of the kitchen counter with both hands to steady myself from collapsing. This wasn't just psychological intimidation anymore. This wasn't a creepy, threatening photograph or a scary phone call meant to make me lose sleep.

"They tried to kill us," I whispered in absolute horror, glancing frantically over my shoulder to make sure Maya couldn't hear us from the kitchen table.

"They tried to make it look like a tragic, fatal accident," Marcus corrected, his sharp eyes flashing with a dangerous, protective intensity. "But they made a fatal mistake of their own. They were sloppy. They left a partial, oily fingerprint on the inside of the wheel well. I've already lifted it and sent it to my contact at the precinct. We are going to find out exactly who did this, Elena, and we are going to break them."
