Chapter 31 - The Threat

|

Arthur’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. He clearly hadn't expected me to stand my ground so firmly in a public setting. He took a deliberate step forward, attempting to use his height to physically intimidate me.

"You really think you can win a legal war of attrition against my firm?" Arthur whispered harshly, dropping the polite facade. "I will drag this out in federal court for years. I will subpoena your finances, Maya's academic records, and everything you hold dear. I will make the media parade your family’s trauma across every news channel until you beg me to settle."

Before I could respond, a large, warm hand rested firmly on my lower back. Marcus seamlessly stepped into the conversation, positioning himself slightly between Arthur and me. The sheer physical presence of Marcus, combined with his unyielding stare, immediately shifted the power dynamic in the room.

"Is there a problem here, Pendelton?" Marcus asked, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that commanded absolute authority.

Arthur took a subtle step back, adjusting his silk tie nervously. "Just offering some friendly legal advice to your partner, Marcus. Trying to save you all from unnecessary public humiliation."

"We don't need your advice, and we certainly aren't intimidated by your threats," Marcus stated flatly. "You are bluffing with an empty hand. We know Richard forged the original transfer documents for the trust. If you push this injunction, I will personally ensure the district attorney opens an investigation into your firm for abetting financial fraud."

Arthur’s face paled significantly. He opened his mouth to formulate a witty retort, but no words came out.

"Enjoy the rest of the gala, Arthur," I added smoothly, grabbing Marcus’s arm. "Because it will be the last high-society event you ever attend once the truth comes out."

We turned our backs on him and walked away, leaving the corrupt attorney standing silently in the shadow of Maya’s beautiful artwork. The battle lines had been officially drawn, and we were absolutely ready for war.
