Chapter 27 - The Unexpected Courier

The celebration dinner at Maya’s favorite Italian restaurant downtown was filled with laughter, toasted garlic bread, and endless discussions about color palettes and frame sizes. It felt like a perfect evening, a solid confirmation that our lives had finally moved past the darkness. However, the universe always had a peculiar way of testing our peace.
The very next morning, a sleek black car pulled up to our driveway. A courier in a sharp suit walked up the stone path and handed me a thick, manila envelope requiring a certified signature.
"Who is it from?" Marcus asked, walking up behind me and wrapping an arm around my waist as I stared at the return address.
"It’s from Pendelton & Associates," I replied, a cold knot forming in the pit of my stomach. "Arthur Pendelton. He was Richard Sterling’s primary defense attorney and the executor of his remaining frozen assets."
I tore the envelope open with trembling fingers and quickly scanned the dense legal jargon printed on the heavy parchment.
"What does it say?" Maya asked, stepping into the hallway with her sketchbook pressed to her chest.
"It is a cease-and-desist order," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "Arthur Pendelton is claiming that the National Arts Endowment is partially funded by a subsidiary trust that still legally belongs to Richard Sterling’s estate. He is filing an injunction to block Maya’s exhibition, claiming the foundation's assets must be liquidated to pay off Richard's massive corporate debts."
Marcus gently took the papers from my hands, his jaw tightening into a fierce, protective line.
"He is trying to use a legal loophole to punish Maya for testifying against Richard," Marcus stated, his eyes dark with anger.

"Can he really stop the exhibition?" Maya asked, her voice wavering slightly as the ghosts of the past threatened to resurface.
"No," Marcus promised firmly. "He is a desperate man clinging to a dead empire. We are not going to let him touch your future."
