Chapter 26 - The Acceptance Letter

|

The weekend arrived with a golden, sprawling sunrise that bathed our home in a warm, comforting light. I was standing in the kitchen, casually stirring my morning coffee, completely lost in the peaceful rhythm of our new life. Marcus sat at the island counter, his reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose as he scrolled through the morning news. The heavy silence of the house was suddenly and joyfully shattered by the sound of rapid footsteps pounding down the oak staircase.

"Mom! Marcus! You have to look at this!"

Maya practically flew into the kitchen, her eyes wide and her breath coming in excited, shallow gasps. She was clutching a thick, cream-colored envelope in her hands. The wax seal on the back had already been torn open in her haste.

"Slow down, sweetheart," I said, setting my mug down with a warm smile. "What is it?"

"It's from the National Arts Endowment," Maya beamed, her voice trembling with pure, unfiltered joy. "They reviewed the portfolio I submitted last month. The one with the charcoal series."

Marcus immediately set his tablet aside, leaning forward with intense interest.

"And?" Marcus prompted, a proud grin already forming on his face. "What did they say?"

"They selected me," Maya cried out, jumping up and down. "I've been chosen as one of the three youth featured artists for the summer exhibition downtown! They are going to frame my work and display it in the main gallery!"

I rushed forward and pulled her into a massive, crushing hug. Tears of absolute joy pricked the corners of my eyes. This was the same girl who, just a year ago, had been too terrified to even leave her bedroom because of Richard Sterling's relentless psychological torment. Now, she was stepping out into the light, claiming her space in the world with unapologetic brilliance.

"I am so incredibly proud of you, Maya," I whispered, holding her tightly.

May you like

Marcus wrapped his arms around both of us, completing the circle.

"We need to celebrate," Marcus declared. "Dinner tonight. Anywhere you want."
