Chapter 6 - The Corrupt Court

The memory of the family court hearing three weeks ago tasted like ash in Raquel’s mouth.
She had sat at the wooden defense table, heavily pregnant, exhausted, and completely terrified. Her court-appointed lawyer, Jimena Robles, was a good woman, but she was entirely outgunned by Emilio’s massive, highly paid legal team.
The Del Valles presented a masterpiece of fabricated evidence.
They submitted the fake emails detailing Raquel's supposed affairs. They brought in a highly paid, corrupt psychologist who testified that Raquel exhibited severe signs of borderline personality disorder and was a danger to herself and others. They paid three of Raquel's former neighbors to testify that she drank heavily and screamed wildly into the night.
"My client is deeply concerned for the welfare of his unborn child," Emilio had argued smoothly to the judge, a man who regularly played golf with Doña Rebeca.
Raquel had begged the judge to look at the bruises on her arms. She pleaded with him to investigate Mauricio.
"These allegations of abuse are clearly the desperate fabrications of an unstable mind," the judge ruled, not even looking at her.
He had issued a preliminary injunction. The ruling was catastrophic: the moment the baby was born, full physical and legal custody would immediately default to Mauricio. Raquel was ordered to undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluation and was strictly forbidden from leaving the city limits.

They had legally stolen her child before she even went into labor. They had frozen her bank accounts, ensuring she couldn't hire a private investigator. They had painted her as a crazy, opportunistic gold-digger to the press.
She had left the courthouse that day feeling like a ghost. They had taken everything from her. But in stripping her of everything, they had accidentally removed her fear.
