Chapter 5 - The Web of Lies
The abuse was not limited to Mauricio. The entire Del Valle family functioned as a synchronized, sociopathic unit designed to completely break her spirit.
When Raquel first tried to speak up, to set boundaries, the family descended upon her like vultures.
Doña Rebeca would use her spare key to enter Raquel's home unannounced, rummaging through her drawers and aggressively criticizing her housekeeping. "You are breeding incompetence in my son's house," Rebeca would sneer.
Paola, the socialite sister, would hug Raquel warmly at public events for the cameras, only to corner her in the restroom moments later. "You look incredibly cheap in that dress," Paola would whisper, digging her nails into Raquel's arm. "You'll never actually be one of us."
But Emilio was the most dangerous. As the family lawyer, he weaponized the legal system. When Raquel finally packed a bag to leave, Emilio sat her down in the grand dining room.
"If you walk out that door, we will ruin you," Emilio stated calmly.
And they did. When Raquel refused to stay silent, the Del Valles hacked her personal emails. They hired a man to claim he was her secret lover. They sent anonymous, highly detailed complaints to the school board, accusing her of inappropriate behavior, which resulted in her immediate suspension.
When Mauricio discovered she was pregnant, he didn't smile. He didn't embrace her. He immediately called his mother.
