Chapter 4 - The Facade

As the leather belt struck her again, Raquel’s mind involuntarily flashed back to the day the nightmare began.

She had been a simple, happy second-grade teacher. She lived in a modest apartment in Coyoacán, surrounded by stacks of old books and colorful drawings her students left on her desk. She didn't care about designer labels or society galas.

She met Mauricio at a school fundraiser. He had seemed like an anomaly—a wildly wealthy man who was surprisingly soft-spoken, attentive, and deeply interested in her life.

"I'm so tired of women who only look at my bank account," Mauricio had told her, handing her a cup of coffee with a warm, genuine smile. "You're different, Raquel. You're real."

She had fallen for the illusion completely. He remembered small details about her day. He sent flowers to her classroom. He made her feel like she was the center of his universe. When he proposed after six months, she believed she had found the safe, loving home she had always desperately craved.

But the cruelty did not start with a slap. It started with a whisper.

A few weeks after the wedding, he began replacing her clothes, telling her her old dresses were "inappropriate" for his status. Then, he began correcting her vocabulary in front of his friends. He convinced her that her old colleagues were jealous of her new wealth, slowly severing her ties to the outside world.

She was a frog in a pot of slowly boiling water. By the time the first physical bruise appeared, her entire reality had been warped. He had expertly isolated her, making her believe that his jealousy was love, and that his aggressive control was just a fierce need to protect her. She hadn't married a prince; she had married a warden, and the mansion in Las Lomas was nothing but a beautiful, gilded prison.
