Chapter 2 - The First Strike

The string quartet abruptly stopped playing. The sudden silence in the massive ballroom was deafening.

Mauricio stepped forward, leaving Raquel standing alone in the center of the polished floor. He walked toward a silver microphone stand near the main stage, projecting an aura of absolute, terrifying calm.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Mauricio’s voice echoed through the high-end speakers. "Tonight, we celebrate my mother, Rebeca. A woman of honor, of truth, and of family."

Polite applause rippled through the crowd. Doña Rebeca, seated at the head table, offered a gracious, practiced nod.

"But tonight is also about cleansing our family of deception," Mauricio continued, his tone shifting into something cold and lethal. He turned his gaze toward Raquel. The crowd parted like the red sea, leaving her completely exposed. "For two years, I have harbored a liar in my home. A woman who tried to steal our legacy, who fabricated abuse, and who carries a child she intends to use as a financial weapon."

Raquel’s breath hitched. She expected the cruel words. She had heard them in private a hundred times.

But she didn't expect what happened next.

Mauricio calmly unbuckled his heavy, Italian leather belt. He wrapped the buckle end around his knuckles. He stepped down from the stage and walked toward her. His face was entirely devoid of emotion. He wasn't red or sweating; his absolute composure was infinitely more terrifying than blind rage.

Without a single word of warning, he swung his arm.

The heavy leather snapped through the air. The first strike landed squarely on Raquel’s back.

The force of the blow was so immense it folded her in half. She gasped, her knees buckling instantly. She crashed onto the cold, unforgiving marble floor, instinctively curling her body to shield her six-month pregnant belly.

A heavy, shocked silence hung over the room.

Then, someone in the back of the crowd let out a nervous laugh.

A few seconds later, another guest clapped.

Raquel gritted her teeth, tasting blood on her lip. She would not scream. Not in front of them.
